How to prepare for a first colonic

girl-showing-her-happy-tummyWe approach colonic hydrotherapy holistically where we see the actual “colonic” session itself as simply part of  the wider “detox” / “healing” / “rejuvenation process” which ideally starts in the days ahead of your session. 

The best preparation is that for a minimum of a couple of days prior to your session you ideally do as many of the following as possible;

  • eliminate unhealthy foods (see below)
  • eat lightly
  • add nutritional supplements along with vegetable juices
  • hydrate well


The more balanced you present on the day of your colonic, the greater the chance your colonic will be more productive as well as having a comfortable and relaxing experience. Good preparation primes your body so that the colonic can then maximize the benefits you’ve started through healthy preparation.

We designed our 9 day cleansing programs to perfectly compliment colon hydrotherapy sessions so we obviously highly recommend you consider starting our program in the days following your colonic.

Included in our preparation guidelines are –

  • AVOID sugar and processed carbohydrates (i.e. bread, pasta, noodles, cereal etc) for as long as possible leading up to your appointment. Sugar and processed carbohydrates have a “pro-inflammatory” effect on the body as well as feed pathogenic yeast and bacteria (both of which leads to excess gas creation).
  • We recommend that you AVOID flesh foods for as many days as possible leading up to your session. Fish and eggs would generally be your best choice of animal protein because they tend to digest easier and more completely.
  • Similarly we recommend to AVOID dairy leading up to your session – simply dairy is difficult to digest and often causes lymphatic congestion which again leads to stagnation and bloating.
  • INCLUDE lots of green salads, steamed vegetables, whole non-glutinous grains, sweet potatoes and other vegetarian options for as long as possible leading up to your appointment.
  • Focus on being fully HYDRATED by the day of your appointment. The best way to hydrate is to drink vegetable juices in the days leading up to your session.  The next best option is to obtain bottled alkaline water or drink water with plenty of freshly squeezed lemon in it. A 3rdoption is to add a pinch or two of unrefined salt (i.e Celtic / Himalayan pink salt flakes) to each glass of water to alkalize it and thus improve absorption.
  • Juices containing two or more of the following would be ideal; carrot, celery, kale, spinach, cucumber or beetroot.
  • Please emphasize vegetables over fruit when juicing (vegetables should account for at least 80% of the volume). If including fruits, lemons are fine and a small amount of sour fruits like green apples or grapefruit etc. Sweet fruits feed yeast so for most people we avoid / limit these during a cleanse.
  • Please avoid foods / drinks that make you gassy particularly the day of your session and the day before. i.e canned foods, soft drinks, sweets, junk food etc.
  • Please EAT LIGHTLY on the day of your appointment. Ideally eat nothing for at least 2-4 hours leading up to your appointment. This will reduce the likelihood of gassiness during the treatment.  You may drink water with fresh lemon juice, fresh vegetable juice or herbal tea. If you eat fruit the day of your appointment please be sure to eat it on its own in the absence of any other kind of food as consuming with other foods leads to fermentation (gas creation).

What is colonic irrigation?

Colon hydrotherapy (colonic irrigation) is a body-based hydrotherapy treatment. During a colon hydrotherapy session, water is gently introduced into the large intestine through the anus in a controlled manner by a qualified therapist or self-administered under the guidance of a qualified therapist.  The purpose of colon hydrotherapy is to achieve the optimal bowel function through the restoration of fluid, matter and gas balance, removal of excess wastes and exercise to the large intestine for the benefit of assisting absorption, assimilation and elimination which is instrumental in maintaining health and wellbeing of the body and mind. – Also read the advice given by the NHS on colonics

What are signs of a colon that is not functioning properly?


Most sufferers speak of symptoms of one or more of these complaints that have occurred for years: constipation, coated tongue, bad breath, shallow complexion, dark circles under the eyes, abnormal body odour, cold hands and feet, unstable blood pressure (up or down), brittle nails and hair, sagging posture (pot belly), tension, fatigue, allergies, indigestion, menstrual problems, swelling of legs, asthma, backache, and loss of memory or concentration.

Is the procedure painful?

Will one colonic completely empty the colon?


Not often. Many of us have a substantial amount of impacted faeces in our colon that consists of hardened, rubbery or wallpaper like material. As you become more aware of what is going on in your abdomen, and as your body learns how to allow the cleansing experience, you are better able to enter into that process, and therefore more material is released. One colonic will remove some of the stagnant waste in the colon. The second and subsequent colonics will remove more. However many you may wish to have will depend upon your personal health objectives and the advice of your therapist.

If I use Colon Hydrotherapy regularly to cleanse my colon, will my colon stop functioning on its own?


Our goal is to assist you in healing your colon and leading you toward better health. An important feature of Colonics is to strengthen the colon and keep it from becoming sluggish. When the colon is sluggish and a bowel movement does not return a few days after therapy, it is an indication that a series of colonics is needed to remove the buildup of faecal material that has built up in the bowel over the years. Once the series of colonics has successfully cleansed the colon, the colon will begin to function regularly.

Does Colon Hydrotherapy wash out intestinal flora and important nutrients?


Colon hydrotherapy re-trains the muscle or the bowel to regain strength. After a series, most people regain the normal bowel function of one to two movements per day. A healthy bowel will have two to three bowel movements a day, depending on what you eat. Trouble is usually first recognised by an individual as constipation or diarrhoea. These danger signs along with foul-smelling stool and gas may be over looked. Golden brown use to be considered the normal colour, but now that vegetables are recommended the color reflects the vegetables. During constipation, you may observe a darkening of the stool because of the long transition time in your system.

Is it embarrassing?


No. Your dignity is completely maintained and we pride ourselves on making your therapy a pleasant experience. Therapy is performed in a private room. You are provided with a disposable gown and blanket that you drape over your body. RICTAT approved devices are used so no uncomfortable or embarrassing odor will exist during colon hydrotherapy.
How much time is required for a Colon Hydrotherapy Session?

Plan about an hour and a half for your first visit, each hydrotherapy session is about 30 to 45 minutes based on the individual. We prefer if you relax in our clinic and stay for sorbet and a cup of tea for a few minutes after the treatment in order to make sure you leave fully revitalised.

What should I do before a session?


Avoid eating gas-forming foods such as beans and cabbage the day of your colonic as well as the day before to help reduce cramping. It can be more comfortable to refrain from eating at least two hours before your scheduled appointment time. For best results, avoid fatty foods and prepare a diet of vegetables and grains.

What kind of diet shall I follow after getting a colon hydrotherapy session?


Following large intestinal cleansing, the body may feel weary or relaxed. This is simply your body working out and processing through its cleaning period; so, proper rest is important for your body to recuperate and rejuvenate. After receiving colon hydrotherapy, for best results follow a very basic diet as advised by your colon hydrotherapist and use the suggested intestinal flora products recommended by your therapist.
