Bacterial Overgrowth Syndrome (BOS)

Bacterial overgrowth syndrome (BOS) is a term that describes clinical manifestations that occur when the normally low number of bacteria that inhabit the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, and proximal ileum significantly increases or becomes overtaken by other pathogens.

The upper intestinal tract was once thought to be a sterile environment; however, low concentrations of various bacteria are now widely accepted to live within or attached to its luminal surface. These bacteria are thought to be present from the time of birth and through adulthood, living in symbiosis with the human host. This relationship is thought to be vital for normal digestive processes, immunity, and intestinal development. Bacterial species usually present include lactobacilli, enterococci, oral streptococci, and other gram-positive aerobic or facultative anaerobes.

Various etiological processes can disrupt mechanisms that keep the number of these bacteria low. These include structural abnormalities (congenital or surgical) and disorders that cause decreased gastric acidity, reduced peristaltic activity, and mucosal damage or atrophy. The clinical manifestations of bacterial overgrowth syndrome stem from the increased bacterial burden on the normal functions of the upper GI system. Prompt recognition and treatment of bacterial overgrowth syndrome should be targeted to prevent and reverse malabsorptive processes.

Bowel Cancer Symptoms

With special mention of  Bowel Cancer Research

One of the difficulties with bowel cancer is that often there are no symptoms until quite late. However, if you have bleeding from the bottom or a change in bowel habits for several weeks it is always wise to visit your GP. Other symptoms can be severe abdominal pain or a lump in the abdomen and acute tiredness or weight loss. All of these symptoms can be signs of other less severe conditions, for example, bleeding from the bottom might indicate haemorrhoids, but it’s vital to get checked out or  Test yourself at home as if it’s found early there is a good chance of a cure.

What exactly does a colonic treatment involve/how is it done?

Colon Hydrotherapy is a gentle treatment during which warm water is introduced into the bowel.

As the water is released, it flows out, providing a gentle cleansing effect upon the bowel wall. This gentle flushing of the bowel is repeated over a period of around 35-50 minutes.
All you have to do is lie comfortably on the bed, and you will feel a warm sensation in the abdomen. As the water enters the bowel, you will begin to feel ‘full’ and as the water is released, you will feel a sensation of release and at the end of the session you will feel cleansed and “lighter” than before your treatment.

People describe this as not just feeling lighter in weight, but in lifting their mood also.
Many do actually lose a little weight during the treatment as many pounds of waste material may have accumulated in the bowel.

Just one colon hydrotherapy session is equivalent to having several regular bowel movements. Further sessions can be even more substantial as older, hardened, impacted faeces are dislodged from the colon walls.

Colonics Hydrotherapy & Weightloss

I often get asked, will I lose weight after a colonic?

Most of my clients report of weightloss between 3lbs and 14lbs, but there are so many things that play a part in the amount loss.

  • How active are you? The more active you are you the more you will burn, the faster your transit time will be too.
  • How hydrated/dehydrated are you?  Those that are extremely dehydrated and/constipated might carry around a bulk amount of waste product, therefor the results might be bigger
  • Weight loss are often reported more than a day or to after the treatment – due to the re-education process that has taken place.  The colonic muscles would have had a bit of a work out and will regain the muscle memory of the treatment and will continue to eliminate more effectively after a colonic.
  • Waste product can remain in your body for a long period of time
  • Inch loss if often more prominent after a colonic due to the amount of wind that would have eased – one of the main reasons people consider this treatment – BLOATEDNESS
